A Message from Our Shepherd

Twenty five years ago we were at the Pan American Center for the installation of the new Diocese of Las Cruces. At that time, October 18, 1982, I spoke about the emotions of beginning a new diocese. What happened here twenty-five years ago was significant, powerful and so beautiful. What has happened since is amazing.
During this time, we have grown in numbers and together we have grown in the knowledge and love of Jesus Christ. We have grown in our understanding of what it means to be Disciples of Christ, what it means to be a Christian, what it means to be a Church. I thank God Our Father for the blessings that have been showered upon this diocese.
Our diocese is our church family. We are a people of faith united by our belief in Jesus Christ. Our diocese is connected through its bishop, to the universal Church. We are all a part of the Church all over the world. It is our faith in Jesus Christ that keeps us going when we face the crisis of illness, separation from loved ones or when depression and anxiety overwhelm us. Faith in Jesus Christ is what gives us hope for the future.
When the diocese celebrates its 50th anniversary or its 100th anniversary, I wonder if we will still be a strong church. Will our churches be open and filled with practicing Catholics? That depends on what we do now – this generation and at this time. As our celebration of the 25th anniversary concludes this year, I commit all the energies and resources of the Diocese of Las Cruces, all its parishes and schools to the cause of handing on the faith. We cannot fail. We must not be indifferent to passing on our faith to the next generation. I call on parents, grandparents, caregivers, teachers, all who have influence on the next generations to join me. Let us commit to this cause for it is the cause of Jesus Christ. He is the reason for our faith. It is after all Jesus who asked us to commit ourselves. Let us obey his command “Go and Teach.”
You are in a most privileged position to support handing on our faith through the United in Ministry (UIM) appeal. UIM is the funding support that makes possible training for seminarians, permanent deacons, catechists, pastoral leaders and youth ministers whose fundamental desire is to work in partnership with you – making certain that our faith is handed on. Other ways that UIM helps our diocesan family is by funding Catholic schools, campus ministry and our diocesan newspaper. Parishes are able to use UIM rebates to help pay parish expenses, build and remodel facilities.
I hope that the annual UIM campaign affords all of us a chance to recommit to the efforts of our parishes and diocese to hand on the faith.

Un Mensaje de Nuestro Pastor
Hace veinticinco años estuvimos en el Centro Pan Americano para la instalación de la nueva Diócesis de Las Cruces. Ese día, el 18 de octubre de 1982, hablé sobre las emociones de iniciar una nueva diócesis. Lo que sucedió allí hace 25 años fue algo significativo, poderoso y muy bello. Lo que ha pasado desde entonces es asombroso.
Durante este tiempo, hemos crecido en número y juntos hemos crecido en el conocimiento y amor a Jesucristo. Hemos crecido en nuestra comprensión de lo que significa ser Discípulos de Cristo, lo que significa ser cristiano, lo que significa ser Iglesia. Le doy gracias a Dios, nuestro Padre, por las bendiciones que ha derramado sobre esta diócesis.
Nuestra diócesis es una familia eclesial. Somos un pueblo de fe, unidos por nuestra creencia en Jesucristo. Nuestra diócesis está unida por medio de su obispo a la Iglesia universal. Todos somos partes de la Iglesia mundial. Nuestra fe en Cristo nos saca adelante cuando nos enfrentamos a una crisis de enfermedad, separación de seres queridos o cuando la depresión y la ansiedad nos abruman. La fe en Jesucristo es lo que nos da la esperanza para el futuro.
Cuando la diócesis celebre su 50 aniversario o su 100 aniversario, me pregunto si seguiremos siendo una iglesia firme. ¿Seguirán nuestras iglesias abiertas y llenas de fieles practicantes? Eso depende en lo que hagamos hoy – durante esta generación y en estos momentos. Al concluir las celebraciones del 25 aniversario este año, comprometo todas las energías y recursos de la Diócesis de Las Cruces, de todas sus parroquias y escuelas a la causa de la transmisión de la fe. No podemos fallar. No debemos ser indiferentes en la transmisión de nuestra fe a las futuras generaciones. Pido a los padres, abuelos, tutores, maestros, todos los que tienen alguna influencia sobre estas generaciones que se unan conmigo. Comprometámonos a esta causa, ya que es la causa de Jesucristo. El es la razón de nuestra fe. Después de todo, fue Jesús quien nos pidió que nos comprometiéramos. Obedezcamos su mandato “Vayan y enseñen.”
Ustedes están en una posición privilegiada para apoyar la transmisión de nuestra fe por medio de la campaña de Unidos en el Ministerio (UIM, por sus siglas en inglés). UIM es el apoyo financiero que hace posible el entrenamiento de seminaristas, diáconos permanentes, catequistas, líderes pastorales y ministros juveniles cuyo deseo primordial es trabajar en asociación con ustedes – para asegurar que nuestra fe será transmitida. Otras maneras en que UIM ayuda a nuestra familia diocesana es ofreciendo apoyo económico a las escuelas católicas, al ministerio en los campos universitarios, y a nuestro periódico diocesano. Las parroquias utilizan los reembolsos de UIM para ayudar a pagar sus gastos y para construir y remodelar sus edificios.
Espero que la campaña anual de Unidos en el Ministerio nos ofrezca a todos la oportunidad de volvernos a comprometer a los esfuerzos de nuestras parroquias y nuestra diócesis de transmitir la fe.
