Agua Viva Special Edition - February 2010

Dear friends in Christ,United in Ministry/Unidos en el Ministerio 2010

At the beginning of each year since 1983, we have appealed to the generous hearts of our parishioners to contribute the necessary funds to maintain the life of the Church in our parishes and in our diocese. Thanks to God and to your continued giving over the years our diocese, while not in any way wealthy, remains solvent and enjoys a reputation of fiscal responsibility. Present and past members of our Diocesan Finance Council can attest to our sound fiscal policies and practices.

As with all families, our parish and diocesan families have to meet their financial needs. However, we do not look at these needs from a merely monetary viewpoint - there is also the spiritual dimension. When we recognize that every gift we have, all that we are and will be, come from God, we begin to think in terms of stewardship, the responsible care and use of God's gifts. The many blessings in our lives are signs of God's love for us. Good stewardship requires us to use well the time, talent and treasure we have received, and to share them with others, especially with our spiritual mother, our Church.

This year we will be conducting two campaigns simultaneously: the usual United in Ministry Appeal, and the Stewardship Capital Campaign, "Together in Faith and Hope." Many of our parishes have chosen to do the Capital Campaign, with pledges to be paid out over the next three years. Those not doing the Capital Campaign will be following the usual United in Ministry process. Both campaigns will benefit our parishes and the diocese.

The Capital Campaign aims to do four things:

  • to raise the capacity of our priests' pension fund, for both diocesan and religious priests
  • to increase funding for the education of our seminarians, our future priests
  • to assist parishes in their specific needs
  • to provide ministry formation and education for handing on the faith

In two years, on my 75th birthday, I will submit my letter of resignation as your bishop, as is required by Church law. It is my fervent desire that the next bishop will find the necessary finances to continue the mission of our beloved diocese. I appeal once more to your love of Christ and his Church, that you will be as generous as you can be to these appeals. God bless you.

Sincerely yours in Christ,

Ricardo Ramírez, C.S.B.
Bishop of Las Cruces
